Gyr
History, sightseeing and so on of the town
Gyr
Gyr is a north-west city of Hungary. It lies the same distance from the three capital cities such as Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava - about 100 km. 3 rivers, the Danube, the Rba and the Marcal flow threw the city.
In this place the celtics lived about 400 BC, and the first name of the city was Arrabona. After the conquest it was called Gyr, and it become the centre of the country. Napoleon’s army fought with Hungarian nobles here in 1809. Napoleon ruined the fortress in this time. The city developed continously and in the 19th century it became an industrial city.

It has a population of 150,000. It is a country seat, plus industrial, trade, economic and culture center. It has a university, 3 collages and several primary and secondary schools. As it is a bishopic seat there are many churches and a chatedral. The main industries are Audi engine factory which employs the most workers in the region and others, such as Philips, Gardenia certain factory, an a biscuit factory, Raba machinery factory, crisps factory.

It has got a plaza and a lot of malls. It is worth seeing the townhall, because it is very picturesque baroque palace. It has a pedestrian street, wich is called Baross street and it has a lot of shops. It is worth seeing ruins as well. I must mention that the chatedral is a beautiful building, where can be found the famous herma of King Saint Lszl. Personally, I love Gyr, because I fancy large cities. There are numerable programmes and parties. Speaking for myself I have been living in Gyr for a year, and studying here for 2 years.
